Martha Jones is here by Noe Geric 28/11/19

For her first comics story, Martha gets to travel to a world where giant robots manipulated by children are destroying everything. There are two old ladies on a flying chair who try to save the planet, a giant robot version of one of the ladies, there's a letter in a bottle lost in space, a terrible bank, some brains with legs... This is a lot of information for a four-episodes comic strip. But everything ties up nicely at the end.

Martha get more than the ''I love the Doctor'' personality she gets on TV. She spends three episodes with the old ladies, flying around on the planet, trying to save the world. She's separated from the Doctor, who finds himself on the HQ of an intergalactic bank ruled by an unlikeable man. The Doctor gets some things to do with a computer turned into a slave, he spends time with another guy; I can't recall his name, but he isn't really useful.

The old ladies are the ''principal guests'', as they're supposed to save the planet from destruction. They get good characterization, but I don't get if their relationship was supposed to be the gay subplot of the story, as they really liked each other. The characters get decent characterization, but the children who are in the giant robots are really annoying. The Doctor should've thrown them into the sun quickly. As the bad guy is the father of one of them, it gets worse. But their end is really satisfying.

The script is nice. Not the masterpiece of the century, but there are good things, and the fantasy feel of the story is respected. The drawing is nice too; not the best I've seen, but it really gives the feel of a fantasy world and gives originality to this alien planet looking like Earth in the old times. The colours are warm and nice, exactly what the story needed. It doesn't get too comical or too serious, just a good-looking opening story for Martha's era.

The Woman Who Sold the World is a nice comic beginning for Martha, a classic New Series adventure with a good script, decent characters and some nice little twists. That's the sort of story you can find at the beginning of a new season, when the companion made his first travels in the TARDIS.
