MythMakers 33:
William Russell

Reviews

A Review by Stuart Gutteridge 23/9/98

"In those days we always used to have terrific discussions about our scripts."

This is an interesting tape for those who want to learn about William Russell, the actor. Or William Russell Enoch, his ever-changing name, just one of many things explained away in this video. The tape opens with William Russell strolling through Trafalgar Square and suddenly being seen through the eyestalk of a Dalek. In a bid to evoke Ian`s last scenes in The Chase, a great deal of time is spent on a Double Decker bus, travelling through London. Here, the discussion turns to his early acting career, his first part and memories of Charlie Chaplin and Marlon Brando amongst others. This actually proves to be a fascinating part of the tape, especially for anyone interested in acting in the Forties`s and early Fifties.

Eventually, the bus reaches Riverside Studios, where a lot of early Doctor Who was filmed and an all too brief tour takes place here. The last part of the tape sees William interviewed by the Thames (where the TARDIS landed and the Daleks reappeared in The Dalek Invasion Earth.) And it is here where Doctor Who is discussed at length. There is no new or scandalous information to be gleaned here, but William`s memories of the show, his thoughts on various stories and of Ian Chesterton and his co-stars are refreshing.

Not essential viewing by any means, but entertaining, especially for fans of the Hartnell era of Doctor Who.
