A Review by Chris Pederson 19/4/05

I have always liked the Sea Devils, so I wanted to see how they were portrayed in The Poison Seas. The art looked cool and I thought it had to be at least interesting. I wasn't sure about Bernice Summerfield as I had never read one of the stories of her or heard any audios. I think I may have jumped-in at too late of a time in her character development for a first story about her. She seemed all right but didn't really interest me too much.

Unfortunately I lost interest pretty quickly after hearing Bernice talking about one of her Sea Devil girlfriends. I really had a hard time stomaching that and the whole new view of the Sea Devils. One of the worst things I see happening over and over in sci-fi, and this being a very good example of how this is wrong, is the humanization of "alien" (hey show me a Sea Devil with citizenship) species. Come on writers, have some damned imagination! You can develop a character without having to turn them into a human being and make them a husband or wife. Does every alien have to have human-type issues and all the frailties and failings? Basically the whole mystic of the Sea Devils was thrown out and wasted. These are strange reptile beings who don't betray their feelings. Why just make them people who look funny and live underwater?

I think that this was just a mistake by Big Finish, it happens. It is too bad it was basically the first one; I have heard another low-rated one I tried on years ago. I knew that others had to be good though and I was right. I picked up other ones since though and found them to be excellent. It is good idea I think to read reviews and figure out if you would like the audios on an individual basis. David Bailey may be a good writer, but I think he may have been the wrong choice to write a Sea Devil story
