Hope everyone had a great Halloween this year. Our county actually decided to let Beggar’s Night be on Halloween (not a regular occurrence, alas), so tonight I had kiddies a’visitin’.
Normally, I get around 40 kids. The most I’ve had in recent years was 49 in 2007 (and then 25 in 2008). So last month when Woot.com was selling glow-sticks one day, I decided to get those for giving out. I got 72 glow-sticks for under $13 including shipping. A deal, I thought. And when they arrived, they were actually pretty decent glow-sticks. (1 used, 71 to go!)
So I wasn’t too worried about running out tonight, seeing as the most kids I’d ever had was 49. But I think someone was busing them in this year. Beggar’s Night starts at 6pm. By 7pm I was giving away the one around my neck. And I had to turn one girl away without one – I felt so bad. (And of course, it was then that the senior girls who had promised they’d be there early arrived – sorry girls!)
71 kids (well, 72 + the senior girls) in an hour. Sheesh! If Woot.com does this deal again next year, I’ll call mom and have her order the max as well, then I’ll have a gross of glow-sticks to hand out.
So anyhoo, I’ve got the porch light off and most of the house lights off. I figure I can come out of hiding at 8pm when Beggar’s Night is over. Hope there’s not too much toilet paper on the house in the morning!!!
Wow, that’s a massive turnout! It shows that statistics aren’t always reliable, LOL! We don’t get trick-or-treaters in my New York City neighborhood. All the kids go to the shops. I wonder if word got out that you had glow sticks-and so everyone inundated you! 🙂
If the rush had been later in the evening, I’d believe the word getting out thing. I still suspect a bus dropoff on Grace street. 🙂
That is cool! I may have to try that next year too. Despite the 90-or-so who came by, we still have candy left. Back it goes into the freezer!
Back into the freezer until next Halloween? Or do you finally get it out for Easter? 😉 “Mom, why did the Easter bunny give me skellingtons instead of eggs?” “Shut up and eat your pumpkin Reese cups.”
LOL! Back ’til next Halloween. It keeps quite well (we have a LARGE freezer.) This year we started out with the candy left from last Halloween. It’s all good. :9
Wow, that’s amazing! We didn’t get a single trick or treater–last year I think we had 2 or 3. Down in Jackson, however, the streets were thronged with kids and adults in costumes, but we’re so far back in the sticks here that it’s not worth it for the chilluns to roaming around up here in the dark, cold upcountry. (Dad seemed a little forlorn about this, though, so I pointed out that all the candy he got is now ours for the taking. Hopefully the chocolate might cheer him up a little, along with the Wellbutrin I’ve been slipping into his daily pill dispenser.) I’m quite sure you gained a new reputation as the Incredibly Cool Glowstick Lady, though–and getting the max seems reasonable, since if you have any left over, you can just hang ’em out the next year, right? And I’m sure the Incredibly Cool Glowstick Lady wouldn’t get t.p’d–I’ve only ever done that once, when I was 14 (the right age for it) and to this day I still feel bad about it!
Didn’t get TP’ed – didn’t really think I would. And I suspect that if I had leftover glow sticks, I’d just use ’em in chemistry class rather than keep ’em for the next year. I love playing with luminol. 🙂
Wow, I rather envy your ability to enjoy Halloween like that; we got one trick-or-treater, a little boy with nothing more than a bucket on his head.
LOL on the boy with bucket. That’s more of a costume that some kids I saw that night. Heh.
For my Halloween event about 85 kids showed up and took away three giant bowls of candy. The last treater was the 11th Doctor. Did Elsa send you that pic?
She posted it on her LJ. Shame the kid didn’t remember what fish fingers & custard were about. 🙂
I thought of you when I saw this new Pulitzer Prize category. 😉 http://www.theonion.com/articles/pulitzer-board-adds-giant-pumpkin-category,26563/
