It has been awhile since I’ve displayed photos of my kittens, so I think I should remedy that.

It’s a little out of season, but here is Lucy with her good friend, pumpkin.
I discovered the kittens have a different meaning for “boxing.” That’s Linus in the box.
Lucy & Linus wait for mommy to come home. (Well, not in this photo, but they have been known to keep watch when I’m away.)
It’s nice of the kittens to help with the household chores, but I don’t think they quite understand the dishwasher yet.
Linus makes sure the Christmas tree tastes right.
The tree is decorated – but they’ve already taken care of the bottom row for me. And if you look close, you can see one of the little ones underneath the tree.

I know – it’s any wonder I get anything done around her for all the “ooohing” I do over my bubbies! 🙂

I want Lucy! 🙂 Speaking of which, I’m highly considering getting a cat from the local humane society… any suggestions/info you can give me would be most helpful. Such as, what questions should I ask, how much I can expect to spend, how often kitty litter needs changing, etc… (or if you can just point me toward a good resource that would be helpful, too). Is it fixed? How does it behave around people? Approx. how old is it? Has it had its shots? Is it an indoor or outdoor cat? Spending: The time when cats are most expensive is in their first year. Lots of shots and tests (feline leukemia is highly contageous and is one of the first tests they do) plus the spaying or neutering. Depending on the type of litter, usually once a week. I prefer the crystals to the sand-type litter. With 2 kittens, I’m still changing the litter box every week or week & a half. (Crystals are supposed to be a once a month thing, but I think that’s an exaggeration). The humane society probably has a lot of first-time-owner help and your vet will also be a great resource. If you are out of the house a lot, I strongly suggest a pair of cats. Poor Leo was very lonely when I wasn’t around. The kitties have each other to play with. I’m finding siblings to be great for the pairing. Good luck on your pet-venture! Kitties are wonderful to have around! Lucy’s the slut & will let anyone hold her. Linus is the mama’s boy and will lay in my lap for hours, but avoids everyone else. Heh.
Hmmm, two cats, eh? Also, what do you recommend: adopting kittens or cats? I am partial to adopting older cats, if for no other reason, then I think they are less likely to be adopted (because people seem to prefer kitties and puppies) and I’d prefer to adopt a less-likely to be adopted cat. Where do you suggest putting the litter box? I have a small kitchen, living room, two bedrooms, and bathroom (there’s a storage room, but it’s pretty full with boxes, I guess that would be the logical choice).
either or. its up to you. getting 2 kittens can make some difference. they’ll grow up together, become closer that way. my 3 littermates are completely different and don’t have much to do with each other. they’re closer to the other cats than themselves. if you can find them, 2 older cats that lived together all their life and shouldn’t be seperated. i’ve seen quite a few and they love each other so much you can’t break them apart. personally i’d probably go for 2 older cats. kittens are a major handful. litterbox in a quiet room. no loud noises if possible (not next to the washer/dryer/furnace/etc. bathroom might be a good choice, as long as its not occupied too much. either that or the bedrooms. low traffic area. nothing too exciting.
how much smell will the litterbox put out (if cleaned regularly)?
only right after they use it. i’m sitting within 10 feet of 3 LARGE litterboxes. and don’t smell a thing. they’re cleaned 3 times a day, dumped and scrubbed once a week. litter completely changed every 1-3 weeks or so. depends on how stinky the litter is. btw, i have 11 cats. 8 litterboxes.
That’s a lot of cats. So to clean the litter box daily you just go in and take out the poop? When you scrub the box do you dump the litter into a bucket or something to reuse it? I am, as you can tell, completely new at this. Dogs I know how to take care of. Last time I lived with a cat I was about 4.
any waste gets scooped away 3 times a day. morning, afternoon and evenings. any outside messes are cleaned up as they are noticed. one of our cats is tailess and she sometimes can’t judge where her back end is in the litterbox. http://www.litterwelcomemat.com/litterwelcomemat/home.html <- these are brilliant for litterboxes. we've had them for years and they really hold up. usually for the once a week scrub, the box is scooped, the litter transfered over to a new litterbox as long as it isn't smelly, extra litter is added if needed, and that one taken back to be put in its spot. dirty litterbox is then cleaned with soap and sprayed with bleach solution before the final rinse. everything gets air dried. takes about 4 hours a week for the litterboxes we have. probably under an hour for 2-3 boxes. http://www.catinfo.org/litterbox.htm is a pretty good article. litter preference is up to you and your cat. we use premium choice mostly. and some other type that gets mixed in some days (can’t remember the name). we can’t have anything too dusty (various allergies in cats) and some perfume-y ones make another cat break out in a rash on his legs. its always a learning experience. i’m still learning tons about cats, even after living with them for 20 years.
Awwwww…puddies gettin’ big. We’ve just brought our tree inside, so the cat isn’t too sure yet about it. Unfortunately, it’s sort of sideways, so I’m waiting for hubby to get home so we can right it again. *huggles Linus and Lucy*
I’m amazed at how big they are now, yet how small they are now! When I used to visit Amy & Rachel, I’d marvel at how small Fruvous was compared to Leo. This time around, he was GINORMOUS compared to my kitties. And with Lucy at least a pound lighter than Linus, she’s just sooooooo light!

Yeah, they are SOOOOO cute as kittens. My little babies are growing up considerably, but these will be normal or small-sized cats, rather than ginormous like my Leo was.
