31 Days – 31 Books (days 25 & 26)

Whoops – missed out on writing the 25th’s entry before midnight, so I postponed it until today. Decided to write it now since tonight is card night at Aunt Becky’s and those usually run LATE.

Day25 – A book where the main character is almost like you

When rembrandt13 mentioned that she was looking forward to my answer to this one, I thought, “damn, is there a book with a main character like me?” And I’ve been thinking that question for awhile. And the fact is, there really aren’t a lot out there. But there are two with traits that I see clearly in me. One is Hermione Granger from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – before she becomes cool (and before she was played by Emma Watson). The annoying know-it-all. Yeah, there’s some of me in that. Another one is Matilda from the book of the same name by Roald Dahl. I was Matilda but in a good home (which was my excuse for never developing magic powers). But man, did I read a hell of a lot when I was a kid. So I was pleased when Dahl wrote a book with a female character who read lots.

Day26 – Book you would read to your children

So many to choose from… But two in particular stand out: Corduroy by Dan Freeman and Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. Both of these books are very precious to my childhood. Corduroy is the anti-Velveteen Rabbit. He’s a teddy bear who manages to find his perfect human (instead of being removed from his human). A great book about bonding with your teddy. 🙂

When my great-grandma Elleman (a Dear Saint if ever there was one) was babysitting me one time, she told me that she’d read me a book before I went to sleep. So naturally, I brought my then-favorite book to her: Where the Wild Things Are. Being a loving great-grandma, she, of course, read me the book. But when my folks got home, her question to them was “Doesn’t your daughter have any nice Christian books to read?” Heh. Sure enough, I received an Arch book from her not long after. (I actually wound up with a nice collection of Arch books and still enjoy them to this day. Fun stories. But Where the Wild Things Are is an even better one. “I’ll eat you up I love you so!”)

Day24 – Book where nobody would expect you read/loved it

Hmmm, I think I’m pretty predictable, book-wise, on what I’ll read/like, if people know me at all. However, I suspect that some of my friends might be surprised that I’ve just checked out Drift: the Unmooring of American Military Power by Rachel Maddow since it’s social studies-y (and I never cared much for social studies in school). But come on, it’s written by Rachel Maddow! Of course I’m gonna check it out! (And so far, 25 pages in, I’m enjoying it.)

PS: Tomorrow is the last day of school – woohoo!

31 Days – 31 Books (day 23)

Day23 – Book on your shelf with the least pages

I’ve got some almost pamphlet sized books in my collection, but I think I’d classify my Jacob’s Ladder book (Heaven and Earth by Sue Clarke & Hilary Arnold) as having the fewest pages. I mean, it’s basically just a 4 sided piece of paper…

The book tells “an ancient Chinese creation myth” (or so it claims – I’m not well versed on those myths). It has very pretty illustrations AND it’s a Jacob’s Ladder, so it’s nifty.

31 Days – 31 Books (day 22): Done with grading edition

Woohoo! I am FINALLY caught up with grading! OK, so students were taking the final exam today and I’ll need to grade it tomorrow, but the lab reports are GRADED! Woo! I’ve probably been behind for 8 of our last 9 weeks on this. Procrastination’s bad, m’kay?

Day22 – Book on your shelf with the most pages

Hmmmm, one of my many science textbooks, or Ronnie Barker’s tome? Let’s go into my library and see!

*time passes*

Ah! While I was walking into my library, I thought “No! It’ll be The Merck Index.” And I was right. 1606 pages BEFORE it gets to the specially numbered appendix (at least one of those sections was 300+ pages). I suspect it even beats my CRC Handbook of Chemistry & Physics (which has sections that start over in number, and I had no desire to add up a bunch of numbers. Besides, the Merck has much thinner pages and is slightly wider than the CRC.)

For comparison, All I Ever Wrote by Ronnie Barker was 736 pages. But turns out it wasn’t even my most paginated non-reference book. I thought “oooh, bet one of the Harry Potter’s has it beat!” and indeed, Order of the Phoenix is about 30 pages more. But then I looked at Inheritance by Christopher Paolini (still not read) and it’s over 800 pages. Thankfully, my George RR Martin books are eBooks.

(OK, is it obvious that I’m a nerd? I mean, I have a Merck (20th birthday present – I’ve now owned it over half of my life) & a CRC (gift from the Dow Corporation after my freshman year of chemistry – so it’s even older!) and I love talking about page numbers…)

31 Days – 31 Books (day 21)

Back home and it’s a good thing! Hope to have trip photos up later this week.

Day21 – most stupid book you read at school

Hmmm, I wonder if the author of this meme disliked reading school assigned books with the description “most stupid” there. As with “hate,” “stupid” is too strong of a word for me. At least regarding books.

Most of the stuff I read for elementary and high school, I really enjoyed. I actually read my 8th grade literature book from cover to cover (well, not all of the related questions, but the stories & poetry within it). I remember when we were assigned A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, those of us who were actually reading the novel convinced those who were only reading the Cliff Notes (remember. no Internet in those bad ol’ days) to read the book, we were so into it.

However… there was one book that we were assigned to read which I did not like. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. *sigh* That book just has no sense of humor. There is a part of me that wonders if I should reread the book now that I’m an adult and more worldly… But no, too many other things to read & reread.

31 Days – 31 Books (day 20): morning edition

Sadly, today is the last day of the conference. We’ve got a couple of sessions, then it ends at 12:30. Mom and I will head to Jaleo (a Spanish tapas place) for lunch and then go to the Artomatic art show across the street from our hotel. 9 floors of art, music, performance by local artists or somesuch. Should be good! Figured I’d better write this up in the morning since I have to work tomorrow (last week of school!)

Day20 – Book that you read at school

Speaking of school… We read quite a few books at school, but today I’ll mention A Separate Peace by John Knowles. We read this my senior year in a class called British Literature. And while we were reading it (it was very good), I asked our teacher why we were reading it in a British Lit class since it was written by an American. Turns out she’d thought it was British because of the boy’s school location. Heh heh. (Guess she wasn’t reading for details…)

31 Days – 31 Books (day 19): Trina’s had 3 Bailey’s & Creams edition

As the subtitle of this blog entry said, I have had a bit to drink tonight at the Drinking Skeptically in the bar this evening. We really had a great day today at the Women in Secularism conference. The sessions were informative and interesting. The dinner was great and we met several nice people. And then we got to chat with one of those couples we met at dinner during the Drinking Skeptically “session” a bit ago. Dad gave us money to spend for that part of our trip and we did a nice job making a dent in it.

Day19 – Book, that you ever wanted to read

Shoot, I was hoping alryssa would have posted her response to this already so I’d know what the question meant (or how she interpreted it to mean). But she’s a day or two behind. I wondered if this is “ever” or a typo of “never” because as written, it doesn’t really make sense.

Going with a book that I never wanted to read, I’d go with The Scarlet Letter but I’ll talk more about that in a future day (regarding school books).

Book that I ever wanted to read… Someday I’m going to finish All the Words by Ronnie Barker. I’ve gotten quite a bit of it read (maybe 1/3) but still haven’t finished.

31 Days – 31 Books (day 18): National Mall edition

Mom and I walked the National Mall there & back again today, along with other places (Arlington National Cemetery, Botanical Gardens). So our legs/feet are up in arms (heh). The ‘net connection in this expensive-ass hotel is piss poor, so I won’t post any photos until after I get home again. Lunch at the National Museum of the American Indian’s Mitsitam Cafe was lovely, and I’ll go into more detail later. Anyhoo, on to today’s book post.

Day18 – Book with the most beautiful cover

Hmmm, another one that is difficult without my library to hand. Possibly my book on Dragonology, since dragons are beautiful. I may have to defer this one until I’m home, actually. Too tired to think now. 🙂

31 Days – 31 Books (day 17): Washington DC edition

Day17 – Close your eyes and get any book from your shelf

Well, I had intended to do this before I left today, but I was running too late. So now I’m at a hotel bar with mom and free (but slow) wifi and no books to randomly grab. I’m having a Potomac Lemonade specialty drink at the hotel starring Captain Morgan’s Spiced Rum) which is pretty tasty, and spinach artichoke dip which is downright evil it is so good.

OK, doing something slightly different. Mom’s given me a random letter, W. So that makes me think of Scott Westerfield (I think I have that name right) and his Uglies series. I’ve actually loaned the first three books to Rachel and Amy, but I still have book 4 to read (Extras, IIRC) and it is on my bookshelf.

Day15 – 4. book from the left on your shelf

31 Days – 31 Books (day 16)

Day16 – 9. book from the right on your shelf

Again with the singular shelf… Anyhoo, I’ll do a similar thing to what I did yesterday. I don’t actually have 9 sets of shelves in my library, but I’ll go around the circle starting from the same point. Likewise with the number of shelves in a set. Then the 9th book to the right. BRB!

*Time passes*

Wound up in the Oversized Book Area (yes, my library has sections like a proper library. Guess I always wanted to be a librarian). And the 9th book from the right was (Um, Linus, you’re sitting on the book whose title I’m trying to read!) DK’s Illustrated Dictionary of Mythology by Philip Wilkinson. Sadly, I haven’t actually read this book. However, I have looked at the photos before and read an entry or two. It’s a thin enough volume that I could read the sucker from cover to cover. I have a small but varied selection of mythology books in my library. Mythology is nifty. 🙂
